Ashborn is one of the most important figures in all of Solo Leveling: the original Shadow Monarch, from whom Sung Jin-Woo inherits his power. Without him, there would be neither a shadow army nor a Shadow Monarch. Let's dive into the history of this legendary character.
Ashborn, who is he?
Ashborn is the very first Shadow Monarch, also called the King of the Dead. Considered one of the most powerful beings in the universe, he rules over an army of shadow soldiers and embodies death itself. It is his power that will be passed on to Sung Jin-Woo.
The greatest of the Monarchs
In the eternal war between the Rulers and the Monarchs, Ashborn stands out as the most formidable of all. His mastery of shadows and death makes him a force that few opponents can hope to face, and a pillar of the world's balance.
The birth of the shadow army
It is Ashborn who creates the very first shadow, the Grand Marshal Bellion, and then builds the immense shadow army. Each extracted soldier adds to the ranks of this legion, loyal to their sovereign until death.
Why Ashborn chooses Sung Jin-Woo
Before disappearing, Ashborn seeks an heir worthy of carrying his burden. He sets his sights on a humble E-rank hunter: Sung Jin-Woo. By bequeathing him the title of Shadow Monarch, he offers humanity its ultimate hope against the Monarchs.
Ashborn in the anime and manhwa
Ashborn occupies a central place in the advanced arcs of the story. To understand the full extent of his legacy and his connection to Jin-Woo, the manhwa and the light novel remain the best entry point.
