One man, an entire army. That is the whole concept of Shadow Extraction, the signature power of Sung Jin-Woo in Solo Leveling. Resurrecting his defeated enemies to turn them into loyal soldiers: this is what transforms a hunter into a true Shadow Monarch. We explain in detail how this ability works, its limitations, and the fascinating hierarchy of his army.

What is Shadow Extraction?
Shadow Extraction is the master ability that Jin-Woo unlocks upon becoming the vessel of the Shadow Monarch. It allows him to resurrect a dead creature or hunter in the form of an entirely devoted shadow soldier. It is this ability that gives birth to his entire Shadow Army. To understand how he obtains it, read the fight Sung Jin-Woo vs Igris.
How it actually works
The process is as simple as it is spectacular. Jin-Woo passes his hand over the body of the defeated enemy and says the command word: "Arise." The shadow of the deceased then rises from the ground to join his ranks. Some notable features:
- extraction costs no mana;
- it works over a wide area: Jin-Woo can extract hundreds of shadows at once on a battlefield;
- it is triggered by a simple keyword, instantly.
This mechanic fits into the "RPG" logic of the Solo Leveling System.
Why extraction sometimes fails
Caution: not all attempts succeed. The success rate depends on two factors:
- the original power of the target: the stronger the enemy was, the more difficult the extraction (for example, Jin-Woo failed to extract Baruka three times);
- the time elapsed since death: after a certain period, the shadow can no longer be retrieved.
This is what makes each extraction of a powerful opponent so precious — and so tense.
Soldiers who retain their memory
Shadows are not just empty shells. They retain the skills, strength, and even the weapons of the original being. An extracted S-rank hunter keeps their powers; a monster keeps its abilities. This is what gives the army its strength: each shadow brings a unique talent, inherited from its past life.
The ranks of the Shadow Army
Not all shadows are created equal. They are classified by rank, modeled on the hunter hierarchy:
- Normal: the foot soldiers, the weakest (E to C-rank level);
- Elite: the most numerous (approximately B-rank);
- Knight: approximately A-rank — starting from this rank, the Shadow Monarch can give them a name;
- Elite Knight: approximately base S-rank;
- Marshal and Grand Marshal: the pinnacle — shadows capable of rivaling the most advanced S-rank hunters, or even beyond.
The most powerful shadows, such as Beru or Bellion, sit at the very top of this pyramid.
Personality according to rank
A fascinating detail: the more powerful a shadow is, the more personality it has. Shadows from Normal to Elite rank have almost no consciousness of their own. Knights begin to express simple emotions (worry, joy). And Marshal-grade shadows possess a highly developed personality — this is the case for Beru, with his distinct character.
Named shadows, Jin-Woo's elite
When a shadow reaches a high rank, Jin-Woo gives it a name — an honor reserved for his best soldiers. This is how Igris, Greed, Tusk (the former Kargalgan), or even Jima were born. Each one becomes a centerpiece of the army.
The power that makes Jin-Woo an army
Ultimately, Shadow Extraction is what sets Jin-Woo apart from all other hunters: where they fight alone, he gains strength with every victory, turning his enemies into allies. The more powerful opponents he faces, the more his army grows — a virtuous cycle that makes him, single-handedly, the equal of a nation. Follow his rise in the Sung Jin-Woo dossier.

Do shadows keep their powers?
Yes: each shadow retains the skills, strength, and weapons of the original being.
What are the shadow ranks?
From weakest to strongest: Normal, Elite, Knight, Elite Knight, Marshal, and Grand Marshal. Named shadows like Igris or Beru are the most powerful.
