A portal opens, a team of hunters rushes in, and a few hours later the danger has vanished — or the team never came back out. In Solo Leveling, everything revolves around a precise operation: the raid. But how does it actually unfold, from scouting the dungeon to collecting the loot? Here is the step-by-step process.

How a raid works in Solo Leveling
In brief

A raid is an expedition by a team of hunters to clear a dungeon: enter through the portal, eliminate the monsters, defeat the boss, and collect the loot. Success depends on the dungeon rank and the team composition. Failure, however, can trigger a catastrophe.

Step 1: The dungeon is detected and ranked

Everything begins before even entering. When a portal appears, the Hunter Association detects it, evaluates it, and assigns it a rank, from E to S. This classification determines everything: the level of hunters to mobilize, the expected danger, and the urgency. A high-rank dungeon left untreated is a ticking time bomb.

Step 2: Forming the right team

This is the step that makes the difference between success and a massacre. A raid cannot be improvised alone: it requires a balanced team, where each class has its role.

  • Fighters and the mage lead the offensive and inflict damage.
  • The tank absorbs blows and protects the group.
  • The healer, rare and precious, keeps the team alive.

These teams are often assembled by guilds, which gather the best hunters. An unbalanced team — without a healer, for example — is heading for disaster.

Step 3: Entering and progressing through the dungeon

The team crosses the portal and discovers the interior: a closed environment, filled with monsters, with its own rules. Progression is methodical — eliminate creatures, advance, stay grouped. This is where experience counts: an imprudent hunter puts the whole group at risk. The double dungeon, where Sung Jin-Woo nearly died, shows how the inside can hold unpleasant surprises.

Step 4: Defeating the boss

At the end of the dungeon awaits the boss — the most powerful creature, guardian of the premises. This is the decisive moment of the raid: the boss is often much stronger than everything that came before. Defeating it clears the dungeon and closes the portal. Some bosses have remained legendary, like the Ant King of Jeju Island.

The stakes: Succeed, or trigger a catastrophe

A raid is never a mere formality. In the event of failure — team decimated, dungeon not cleared in time — the dreaded scenario is triggered: the dungeon break. The monsters, instead of remaining locked inside, surge into the real world and sow chaos. That is why every step, from ranking the dungeon to composing the team, is taken seriously.

The Sung Jin-Woo case: The solo raid

This is the whole meaning of the title. Where a raid normally requires an entire team, Sung Jin-Woo leads his own alone — hence "Solo Leveling." His secret: the System, and above all his shadow army. While others recruit teammates, he summons his own army. What should be group work becomes a demonstration of individual power.

FAQ — Raids in Solo Leveling

What is a raid in Solo Leveling?

A raid is an expedition led by hunters to clear a dungeon before it becomes dangerous. A team enters through the portal, faces the monsters, defeats the boss, and then collects the loot. It is the heart of the hunter's profession — and the main source of income.

How does a raid unfold step-by-step?

First, the Association detects and ranks the dungeon. Then, a team suited to the rank is formed, with a balance of classes (fighters, mage, healer…). The team enters through the portal, progresses by eliminating monsters, then faces the boss. Once the boss is defeated, the dungeon is cleared and the portal closes.

What happens if a raid fails?

Failure can be fatal. If the team is decimated or the dungeon is not cleared in time, the feared scenario is a dungeon break: the monsters surge into the real world. That is why the dungeon rank and team composition are so important.

Why is team composition crucial?

Because no single hunter can do it all. A successful raid combines complementary classes: fighters and a mage for attack, a tank to take hits, a healer to recover. An imbalance — for example, no healer — can doom the entire team.

Does Sung Jin-Woo do raids solo?

That is the whole point, and the origin of the title "Solo Leveling." Thanks to his shadow army, Sung Jin-Woo can solo raids that would normally require an entire team. Where others need a group, he summons his own army.
