All of Solo Leveling begins with a mission that should have been mundane. A D-rank dungeon, a team of hunters, a routine outing — and then a second, hidden portal that changes the destiny of humanity's weakest hunter. This is the story of the double dungeon, the scene that gives birth to the Shadow Monarch.

The God Statue of the Cartenon Temple, the heart of the Solo Leveling double dungeon
Quick Answer

The double dungeon is a secret dungeon hidden within another. Inside, Sung Jin-Woo's team discovers the Cartenon Temple, a God Statue, and lethal Commandments. Almost everyone dies. Jin-Woo, dying, then receives the System and becomes the Player: the only being capable of leveling up. It is the birth of the entire series.

A dungeon hidden in a dungeon

In the world of Solo Leveling, Gates connect our world to dungeons populated by monsters, which hunters clear for rewards. Each dungeon has a rank, from E (the weakest) to S (the most dangerous). Sung Jin-Woo, for his part, is ranked E-rank: "humanity's weakest hunter." His raids mainly serve to pay for his sick mother's medical care.

That day, his team explores an uneventful D-rank dungeon. The exit is near when Jin-Woo notices a strange engraving on a wall: the entrance to a second dungeon, hidden inside the first. A "double dungeon." The veteran hunter Song Chi-Yul warns that these places are extremely rare and known to be incredibly dangerous. But staying or leaving also has its risks. The team crosses the threshold.

The Cartenon Temple and the God Statue

On the other side, it is not a cave but a temple. A vast, silent hall, dominated by a gigantic God Statue. On the walls, Commandments are engraved in a language that no one understands. The place bears a name that will return later in the story: the Cartenon Temple.

The calm is a trap. When the light goes out, the statue comes to life.

The Commandments: obey or die

The engraved rules are simple and ruthless: one must bow before the statue and show it respect. Anyone who disobeys — stays standing, runs away, or attacks — is instantly slaughtered. Most hunters do not understand the rules in time. The carnage is total.

In the midst of the chaos, Sung Jin-Woo does what no one else does: he observes. He deciphers the rhythm of the Commandments, understands when to kneel, and shouts the rules to the survivors. Seriously wounded, he holds the line to allow a few to escape. It is there, on the brink of death, that everything changes.

The birth of the Player

When he should be dying, a blue window appears before his eyes. A message: he has acquired the qualifications to become "the Player". He accepts. A few days later, he wakes up in the hospital, unscathed — and an interface now follows him everywhere: the System.

This System gives him quests, stats, and, above all, a unique ability among all the hunters in the world: leveling up. The weakest hunter has just received the only power that matters. Discover how he uses it in the evolution of Sung Jin-Woo, from E-rank to Shadow Monarch.

Why this scene changes everything

The double dungeon is not just a first fight: it is the turning point of the entire series. It introduces the System, it reveals that the Cartenon Temple hides a much greater secret — linked to the very origin of Jin-Woo's power — and it transforms an extra into the hero of a global phenomenon. Everything that follows, from the dungeons of Jeju to the Monarchs' war, stems from this room. To place this moment in the grand tapestry, see all Solo Leveling arcs in order.

FAQ — The Solo Leveling double dungeon

What is the double dungeon in Solo Leveling?

It is a hidden dungeon concealed inside another. Sung Jin-Woo's mission begins in an apparently mundane D-rank dungeon; while exploring, the team discovers a second portal leading to a much more dangerous room: the Cartenon Temple. It is this trap within a trap that we call the "double dungeon."

What happens in the double dungeon?

The team stumbles upon an immense God Statue and Commandments engraved in an unknown language. Those who do not obey the rules are slaughtered by the statue as it comes to life. Most of the hunters die; Sung Jin-Woo, seriously wounded, understands the rules and allows a few survivors to escape.

Why is the double dungeon so important?

Because it is the event that changes everything: on the brink of death, Sung Jin-Woo receives a message from the System and becomes the "Player," the only hunter capable of leveling up. Without the double dungeon, there would be no System, no Shadow Monarch. It is the starting point of the whole story.

What is the Cartenon Temple?

It is the name of the hidden room in the double dungeon, dominated by the God Statue. The place reappears later in the story and proves to be linked to the origin of the System itself.

In which episode do we see the double dungeon?

Entering the double dungeon and the awakening of Sung Jin-Woo take place in the very first episodes of season 1 of the anime. It is the opening scene of his rise.
