Not all of Sung Jin-Woo’s enemies are dungeon monsters. Kang Taeshik is one of the series’ first human antagonists—and one of the most chilling. Behind his facade as a respectable agent of the Hunter Association hides a ruthless assassin, ready to kill for money. His clash with Jin-Woo marks a turning point: the first time the hero turns his power against a human being. A full profile.

Who is Kang Taeshik?
Kang Taeshik is a B-rank Assassin-class hunter. Officially, he is a member of the Surveillance Team of the Hunter Association, working under Woo Jin-Chul. Discreet and competent, he has all the makings of a model civil servant… but it is just a facade.
His Assassin class is more than just a label: fast, devious, and dreadfully effective in close combat, Kang Taeshik is built to kill quickly and cleanly. To understand the class and rank system, see our guide on hunter ranks.
A facade: the Surveillance agent
Initially, Kang Taeshik is presented as a simple agent tasked with surveilling suspicious hunters. His official mission: measure Jin-Woo’s mana, as the Association suspects the latter underwent a mysterious "second awakening" after the double dungeon. A perfect cover to approach his target without arousing suspicion.
The contract: three billion won
The truth comes out during a D-rank dungeon raid. There, Kang Taeshik supervises a trio of convict hunters—criminals allowed to participate in raids in exchange for sentence reductions. But he has another mission, an unofficial one.
A man has indeed offered him three billion won (about 2.3 million dollars) to eliminate the three prisoners and disguise their deaths as a dungeon accident: these criminals had targeted the daughter of his client. Kang Taeshik accepts without hesitation—and intends to eliminate any inconvenient witnesses, Jin-Woo included.
His true nature: a psychopath
Behind the mask of the zealous agent hides a psychopath who takes sick pleasure in killing. Possessing a superiority complex, Kang Taeshik works as a hitman on the side. It is this unapologetic cruelty that makes him such a striking antagonist: he represents not a supernatural threat, but the very human darkness of a world where power corrupts.
The fight against Sung Jin-Woo
The clash between Jin-Woo and Kang Taeshik is one of the tensest in the beginning of the series. The assassin has the advantage of experience and cunning; Jin-Woo, meanwhile, now possesses the powers of the System. The hero notably uses his Bloodlust skill to crush his opponent’s stats and shatter his confidence.
After a fierce duel, Jin-Woo gains the upper hand and drives the Fang of Kasaka into the assassin's chest, neutralizing him. This fight is symbolic: it is the first time Jin-Woo faces—and dominates—a dangerous human being, a sign that his power already far exceeds his official rank. Discover his entire journey in the Sung Jin-Woo dossier.
