Some secondary characters have a disproportionate impact on the story. Hwang Dongsuk is the perfect example: a criminal hunter whose death at the hands of Sung Jin-Woo triggers a spiral of revenge… leading to the birth of the shadow Greed. A portrait of an antagonist whose shadow looms long after his disappearance.
Who is Hwang Dongsuk?
Hwang Dongsuk is a Korean C-rank hunter of the Tank class. He is best known for being the older brother of Hwang Dongsoo, the powerful S-rank hunter. But where his brother is a feared combatant, Dongsuk is, above all, an unscrupulous opportunist.
The "Lizards": criminal hunters
Hwang Dongsuk leads a group nicknamed the "Lizards": hunters who murder their own teammates inside dungeons to hoard all the loot. A dungeon is the perfect place to disguise a murder as an accident — and that is exactly their modus operandi. This illustrates a dark side of the hunter profession, where power also attracts the worst individuals.
The fatal confrontation with Sung Jin-Woo
During a raid, the Lizards attack, intending to eliminate everyone. Wrong target: among the hunters is Jin-Woo. Totally underestimating who he believes to be a weak hunter, Hwang Dongsuk finds himself facing a power that far surpasses him, and he loses his life in the process. To understand the hunter hierarchy, see the hunter ranks.
A death with heavy consequences
The disappearance of Hwang Dongsuk does not close the story — it opens it. His brother Hwang Dongsoo makes it a personal matter and vows to avenge his death. This obsession will lead him straight to Jin-Woo… and to his own end, transformed into the shadow Greed. Thus, from the death of a criminal hunter is born one of the soldiers of the Shadow Army. Follow the whole saga in the Sung Jin-Woo dossier and discover all the characters of Solo Leveling.
