Who is Chugong?

Chugong is a South Korean light novel author, primarily known as the creator of Solo Leveling, which was first published as a novel in 2016 and then adapted into a webtoon in 2018.

Despite his immense success, Chugong remains very discreet: few interviews, no media life, and very little personal information released. This choice to remain in the shadows also echoes the world of his hero, Sung Jin-Woo, a lone hunter who became overpowered.

Chugong's Influences

The world of Solo Leveling did not come about by chance. It features several influences:

• RPGs (Role-Playing Games): The system interface in Solo Leveling recalls the mechanics of video games like Diablo, Skyrim, or World of Warcraft.
• Shonen-style manga: with gradual power scaling, epic battles, and endearing secondary characters.
• The dungeon and gate culture: very prevalent in modern Asian fantasy (e.g., The Gamer, Tower of God, etc.)

Chugong succeeds in mixing all these elements to create an original, intense, and addictive universe.

The Birth of Solo Leveling

Before Solo Leveling, Chugong had written a few other works, but it was with this project that he found his signature. He began publishing Solo Leveling online in 2016 via the South Korean platform KakaoPage.

Following the novel's meteoric success, a webtoon adaptation was launched in March 2018, illustrated by Jang Sung-Rak (a.k.a. Dubu) of Redice Studio. The combination of Chugong's writing and Dubu's punchy artwork propelled the work to international status.

An Author Who Marked a Whole Generation

Today, Chugong is considered one of the greatest Korean webnovel authors, even if he keeps a low profile. Thanks to Solo Leveling:

• He has won over millions of readers worldwide
• He has inspired animated adaptations (Crunchyroll, A-1 Pictures)
• He has paved the way for other Korean authors in the webtoon universe
